CASSANDRA WILSON - Belly Of The Sun (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"Belly of The Sun, her fourth release for Blue Note Records, is the classic Cassandra Wilson journey, where borders and boundaries are sometimes pushed, sometimes expanded, sometimes eliminated but always discounted as limitations. Embracing Blues, African, Jazz, R&B, Brazilian and pop sensibilities, Belly of the Sun, is an invitation into the many sounds that have filtered through the musical landscape of the South. Featuring both original material and startling interpretations of material by other songwriters such as The Band, Bob Dylan and Robert Johnson, Belly of The Sun is full of the power of Cassandra's Mississippi roots and the roots of American music."

RAY CHARLES - Genius Loves Company (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"The fact that Genius Loves Company will be Ray Charles's album inspires an unavoidable blue feeling. But it's also a happy reminder that the man spent the last months of his life at work doing what he loved. The overall effect of these dozen duets is autumnal and smooth. Brother Ray is on point and cruising here. Fine moments abound--you can hear his delight even in the rather stiff company of Diana Krall and Natalie Cole. His voice sounds a bit frayed by ill health at times, but it also allows for great performances like the slyness behind the ache in his version of the old soul hit "Hey Girl" with Michael McDonald and a grand "Crazy Love" with Van Morrison. Potently, he and Gladys Knight remind us of the continued timeliness of Stevie Wonder's "Heaven Help Us All." Its best moments make Company one more essential purchase for Ray Charles fans."

JOANNA CONNOR - Nothing But The Blues (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 256

Brooklyn, NY-born vocalist/composer/electric slide guitarist Joanna Connor honed her craft, shedding and learning in Chicago's blues clubs. However, with several albums to her credit along with a seemingly hefty touring schedule, the artist has attained prominence in Europe and abroad, as the high-octane “Nothing But The Blues" was recorded live in Bamberg, Germany. Essentially, Ms. Connor once again demonstrates her exuberant blues-based convictions via her spirited vocals, electrified crunch chords and scorching slide guitar lines. Supported by a rock solid band, featuring bassist Darnell Wilcher, drummer Lance Lewis and guitarist Tony Palmer, Ms. Connor belts out a series of standard and original compositions amid a 70's style hard rock groove, brimming with fiery dynamics and strong soloing. And while the author of the CD liners boldly states; “This is the future of blues-rock", admirers of sizzling blues-drenched guitar licks, impacting opuses and bone-crushing interplay might reap huge benefits here.

CHRIS REA - The Road to Hell & Back (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

After a long career and a potentially fatal illness, Chris Rea drove down his last road with this tour last year. He is not gone for good but says that in future he will only appear as part of a three-man band, possibly to be called The Fire Flies. For a man who has enjoyed the many highs of success (he has sold over 25 million albums) and suffered too many lows (of ill health) over his illustrious career, "The Road To Hell and Back Again" is apt to say the least. With a body of work that most artists can only dream of (his 11 CD "Blues Guitar" box set sold an amazing 50,000 copies!) and a tour history that is second to none, it's surprising that this is Rea's set of hits performed live. From his farewell tour of 2005, the set includes his biggest international hit "Fool (If You Think It's Over)", "The Road To Hell", "Josephine", "Let's Dance", "Julia" and "Stainsby Girls", as well as Jazee Blue" and "Stony Road", some of Rea's first rate, genuine blues.

JOHN EARL WALKER BAND - People Are Talkin (2005)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

The John Earl Walker Band’s latest release, People Are Talkin' (Walkright Music), features more of the same of their hard-edged blues/rock sound, but this time there’s more of a blues edge to the proceedings. Walker, who has toiled for many years on the New York music scene, seems to have found the right combination on this release. His guitar work is just outstanding, particularly on selections like “It’s All Up To You,” and “Introductory Plan”, and his gruff vocals are what the doctor ordered on tracks like the title cut, “Introductory Plan,” “Lyin’ and Cheatin’,” and “Too Sad To Weep.” The band, including Peter Harris on bass, Bobby Infante on drums, Joey Tremelo on guitar, Johnny Byrne on harmonica, and Gene Cordew on keyboards provide steady and dependable backing for Walker. Although all the tracks have their merits, Walker saved the best for last with “Welcome Back Mr. Blues,” a nearly seven minute blues tour de force with plenty of powerful blues guitar that you hate to hear come to an end. Fans of blues/rock will really love this one.

JUNIOR WELLS - You're Tuff Enough (1968)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"Another period of the veteran Chicago harp man's career that awaits CD documentation -- and one of the most exciting. Wells's late-'60s output for Bright Star and Mercury's Blue Rock subsidiary frequently found him mining funky James Brown grooves (with a bluesy base, of course) to great effect -- "Up in Heah" and his national smash "You're Tuff Enough" are marvelous examples of his refusal to bend to purists' wishes (though there's a glorious version of Bobby Bland's blues-soaked "You're the One" that benefits handily from Sammy Lawhorn's delicate guitar work)."

ELMORE JAMES - Blues Masters: The Very Best Of Elmore James (2000)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"This rocking trove of stylistic innovation spans Elmore James's peak recording years, from 1951 to 1963. In the charging fury of his slide guitar and his screaming voice one hears the echo of fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Robert Johnson, whose local Delta performances in the mid-1930s first inspired young Elmore to play guitar. Johnson's "Dust My Broom"--which became James's signature song and the foundation of his recording career--kicks things off here with the slashing guitar work that helped define the electric-blues idiom, followed by his instrumental showpiece "Hawaiian Boogie." Drenched in Delta-driven emotion, his fiery vocals are well represented on "It Hurts Me, Too" and "The Sky Is Crying", and the classic "Shake Your Money Maker" is one of several dance numbers powered by the raw, driving intensity that marked James's recorded legacy and influenced every slide guitarist working in his wake."

DICK DALE - Better Shred Than Dead: The Dick Dale Anthology (1997)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

The big picture on Dick Dale -- the inventor of surf music, the Godfather of Loud, precursor of heavy metal, the first high-energy power guitarist (all titles being proffered from the man himself to describe his contributions) -- gets told in a real fine way on this two-disc, 39-track anthology. Although single-disc best-ofs exist, this is the first one to... More cross-license from various labels. Dale started as a vocalist who just happened to be able to furnish his own guitar solos, and it's here that the compilation starts. But by track four on the first disc, "Let's Go Trippin'," the Dick Dale story begins in earnest. The sopping-wet surf sound hadn't been invented yet, but the staccato picking, heavy twang, and hard attack were already in place. The outboard Fender reverb tank that became part of Dale's signature found its first workout on "Miserlou" (although Dale claims otherwise), and what followed was the beginning of surf music, pure and simple. Most of the groundbreaking recordings were featured on Dale's debut disc, Surfer's Choice, hands down the surf album that started it all. From this classic comes "Shake-N-Stomp," "Take It Off," and the one that made him a California legend, "Surf Beat." The rest of the first disc carries you through his later Capitol recordings while the second starts with the second half of Dale's career in 1983 with live tracks from his The Tigers Loose album and steers you throug...

Personnel includes: Dick Dale (vocals, guitar, tenor saxophone, trumpet); Stevie Ray Vaughan, Art Munson, Glen Campbell, Barney Kessel, Rene Hall (guitar); Bobby Strickland (digeridoo); Jerry Brown, Lee Farrell, Larry Gillette, Jim Horn, Plas Johnson, Alan Palmer, Paul Carman (saxophone); Ted Lancaster, Steve Crum (trumpet); Scott Kyle, Mike Johnson (trombone); Bill Barber, Chip Walsh, Vincent Welnick (keyboards); Bryan Deitz, Jerry Levinton, Leon Russell, Steve Soest, Billy Pulliam, Ron Eglit, Rowland Salley (bass); George Dumas, Drew Johnson, Jack Lake, Jerry Stevens, Hal Blaine, Prarie Prince, Jill Dale (drums, percussion); Darlene Love, Fanita James (background vocals).

JOHN MELLENCAMP - Freedoms Road (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"The heartland rocker's first album of all-new material in more than five years finds John Mellencamp in full anthem mode. This is his State of the Union address, with guitars that chime like the Byrds heralding sentiments that recall the socially-conscious 1960s, yet sound all the more pertinent today. Balancing the desolate landscape of "Ghost Towns Along the Highway," the hell-on-earth of "Rural Route," and the tolls demanded on the title track's "Freedom's Road" are the embrace of brotherhood on "Someday," the Everyman populism of "The Americans," and the soaring transcendence of "My Aeroplane." Within the context of the album's song cycle, the "Our Country" centerpiece sounds richer and more powerful than it has as a truck commercial--like a roots-rocking sequel to Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land." Mellencamp enlists Joan Baez for a duet on the protest ballad "Jim Crow," while saving his most blistering political commentary for the unlisted bonus track, "Rodeo Clown."

Besides including the entire Grand Funk Railroad hit catalog and the key album tracks you'd expect, this 1999 3-disc box set also contains a wealth of unreleased material. Classic rock staples as "We're An American Band," "I'm Your Captain," and "The Loco-Motion," are the obvious attraction here, but longtime fans will be fascinated by such oddities as pre-GFR tracks, studio outtakes, and a few cuts from the band's successful 1998 reunion. With a total of 45 tracks, 30 YEARS OF FUNK shows why Grand Funk was one of the most popular and enduring U.S. rock bands of the early '70s.

BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS - The Birth Of A Legend (1977)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"This album is a treasure trove of very very early Wailers material, back when they were doing ska, as well as r&b based tracks. Even in these early tracks, there are glimpses of the greatness to come for both Marley, who is mostly featured, and Peter Tosh. Great vocals, wonderful music, and a very important piece to the overall puzzle that was the Wailers' music in the bginning. Indispensible listening."

BILLY GIBSON BAND - Southern Livin' (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Billy Gibson Band wants to bring horny back. According to their new album, Southern Livin' is all about ATV-riding, fishing, and drinking ice-cold beer with "real-hot chicks." That last is tantamount to a mission statement. With Southern Livin', the band channels Clarence Carter. But where Carter's raunch works because it's stated mirthfully yet plainly, Gibson et al. couch the bawdry in sincere and clunker metaphors that never get off the ground. The album isn't all hound-dog revelry, though, as the begging "One More Time" from last year's Billy Gibson Band is turned into the complaint "Too Many Times." Gibson is a magnificent harmonica player and a charismatic performer, and guitarist David Bowen and keyboardist Charlie Wood can hold their own with anyone on Beale, but Southern Livin' isn't the right vehicle for them.

BIG JOE TURNER - Big, Bad & Blue: The Big Joe Turner Anthology (1994)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"Joe Turner had one of the great 50-year careers. Beginning as a blues shouter in the '30s with his partner, pianist Pete Johnson, in Kansas City bars, he recorded often in a variety of contexts: as a duo with Johnson, with honking jump-blues bands, in front of small combos in the rock & roll era, with jazz and blues groups until close to his death in 1985. Capable of handling a huge range of material from 12-bar hollers to pop ballads, Turner easily fills this three-CD set with his vast depth and humor."

THE WHO - Quadrophenia (1973/1996)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"This 1996 digitally remastered reissue of QUADROPHENIA contains remixed versions of "The Real Me," "Quadrophenia," "Dr. Jimmy" and "The Rock." It comes with a 52-page booklet. Originally released on MCA (10004). The Who: Roger Daltrey (vocals); Pete Townshend (various instruments, background vocals); John Entwistle (horns, bass instrument, background vocals); Keith Moon (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: John Curle (spoken vocals); Chris Stainton (piano). By the early 1970s, rock & roll had been around long enough to begin to examine its own past. In the States, this resulted in Sha Na Na, but in Great Britain, where the popular culture of the young was more complex and coded, the Who's QUADROPHENIA was the most powerful example of this nostalgic view. Reviews at the time focused primarily on the obscure psychological aspect of the story--supposedly, the four sides of the original double-album set are meant to examine the four sides of the main character's personality, each one represented by a different member of the Who. However, the most interesting aspect of QUADROPHENIA is its seamy but poetic depiction of London's early-'60s Mod subculture, from which the Who originally sprang. Set during the weekend of a climactic seaside gang fight between the Mods and their archenemies the Rockers, Townshend's story follows Jimmy, the archetypal Mod. The impressionistic songs tell an elliptical tale, but also function on their own as vintage '70s Who at their hard-rock height--the sneering "The Punk and the Godfather," the driving "5:15" and the anthemic, redemptive closer "Love, Reign O'er Me" are among Townshend's finest work."

BUDDY GUY & JUNIOR WELLS - Last Time Around (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"This in-concert CD caps Buddy Guy's partnership with harp hero Junior Wells, who died of lymphoma in January 1998. The set, taped five years earlier at Guy's Chicago nightclub, is an unabashedly sentimental journey back to their roots. It's just Guy and Wells on acoustic guitar and harmonica, cutting up and playing their own standards like Guy's "You Better Watch Yourself" and Wells's signature "Hoodoo Man," as well as classics by such influences as Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Jimmy Rogers, and even Ray Charles. Guy's focused intensity is offset by Wells's good-natured clowning, yet the performance never sacrifices its strong musicality."

DADDY MACK BLUES BAND - Bluestones (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Mack and the band all have ties to the great Memphis blues combo, the Fieldstones - all were members of the band during the early 1990s. When the Fieldstones finally broke up in 1994, they continued performing together as the house band at the legendary Green's Lounge. Since then, the band has been cranking out their infectious grooves around Memphis all week long. Individually, the members of the
group have deep roots in Memphis' music tradition. Brothers James and Harold Bonner form the nucleus of the band, having performed together for over thirty years. Born and raised in Memphis, the Bonners grew up immersed in the city's R&B and blues sounds.

ALISON KRAUSS & UNION STATION - New Favorite (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"After her 1999 gold release, Forget About It, Alison Krauss has found additional success as part of the soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou?--an album that's done more to advance the cause of bluegrass since Bill Monroe first conjured the music out of the hills of western Kentucky. While Forget About It showcased the more contemporary part of Krauss's musical equation and the O Brother soundtrack spotlighted the more traditional, New Favorite combines the approaches in balancing the softer sounds with the rougher-edged material. Krauss particularly shines on the soulful title tune of love gone cold, her vocal--softer than a cloud and more intimate than a midnight kiss--threatening to steal your breath away. However, it's mostly the older sounds that you'll remember from this largely somber album, one that telegraphs uncertainty, doom, and the promise of bloodshed throughout much of the repertoire. On "Momma Cried," a song about a child-snatching that tore a family asunder, Dan Tyminski's tenor vocals rise above a wailing Dobro, a driving banjo, and a thumping, anchoring bass to convey unspeakable pain. Too many of the pop-minded songs fall flat in comparison, but although this may not be the group's best effort overall, no other crossover bluegrass band begins to meet their mark either musically or emotionally, as New Favorite so amply shows."

DENNY KING - Evil Wind Is Coming (1972)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 256
RARE CD RARE CD RARE CD RARE CD RARE CD

Denny King was yet another Lancaster based musician. This album of blues and boogie (which is well worth searching out) includes ex Magic Band members Alex St Claire (guitar, trumpet and production), and Doug Moon (harmonica), plus former Exiles drummer Greg Hampton. Denny King moved on and set up a booking agency booking bars with the intent of helping musicians get started and actually make a living. He was a pioneer in opening the venues for musicians throughout Asia, and was the key person for providing top notch national entertainment for US forces in Korea. He died in April 2000 of a stroke/ heart attack - a rather humble and religious man. At the time of his death he had been working with some other musicians in his church in a band called The Watchmen. A number of songs were recorded and there are plans for these to be released if a label can be found and some production work done on the music.

CHRIS DUARTE GROUP - Sugar Texas Strat Magik (1994)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"It may be cruel to dismiss Chris Duarte as just another Stevie Ray Vaughan wannabe, but it's accurate. There's not an original sound or sentiment on this debut album, right from the copped licks of opener "My Way Down" to the environmental cautions of the finale "Borrowed Love." Duarte is technically adept enough to get many of the late Vaughan's guitar mannerisms right, from his rich-but-brittle Stratocaster tone to the turnarounds he uses to set up his solos. He's a pallid vocalist, however, which doesn't help plead his case as an emerging talent. In fact, four years after this debut--which beat both Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepard to the record stores--Duarte has yet to make his mark."

JO DEE MESSINA - Greatest Hits (2003)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Jo Dee Messina - her spunk, warmth, and red hair recalling the late great Dottie West - has been one of country music's most prominent female artists since her self-titled debut in 1996. With her initial hits "Heads Carolina, Tails California" and "You're Not In Kansas Anymore," it appeared that Jo Dee would devote herself musically to our fifty nifty United States. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. This Greatest Hits contains all of the aforementioned hits plus four new recordings. These new tracks, including leadoff single "Was That My Life" and its follow-up "I Wish" are reflective and/or optimistic odes of a gentle variety. The collection's sequencing is a bit odd, with several uptempo tracks in a row dominating the first half of the lineup, followed mostly by ballads. Mixing them up better would have made the cd far more enjoyable to listen to, since each individual recording is first-rate.

TERRY JACKS - Into The Past...Greatest Hits (1989)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320
RARE CD RARE CD RARE CD RARE CD RARE CD RARE

Singer, songwriter, record producer, born in Winnipeg 29 Mar 1944. Raised in Vancouver, Jacks pursued his musical interests after trying his hand as a draftsman. In the mid-1960s he was a singer and guitarist with the Chessmen in local clubs and on CBC TV's 'Music Hop,' where he met the singer Susan Pesklevits. As husband and wife, they formed the short-lived Poppy Family in 1968. Essentially a duo with accompanying musicians, Craig McCaw (guitar) and Satwant Singh (tabla), Poppy Family had international hits with 'Which Way You Goin' Billy?' and 'That's Where I Went Wrong'. The former reached No. 1 in Canada and No. 2 in the US on the Billboard charts, won the group four Juno awards in 1969 for best single, best "middle of the road" album, best group performance and outstanding sales, and eventually sold over 2.5 million copies. The songs 'Where Evil Grows,' 'No Good to Cry,' and 'Good Friends' were also popular. The Poppy Family was invited to appear on the Ed Sullivan show but chose to appear at Expo 70 in Osaka instead. Jacks, who sang in what Peter Goddard described as a 'feathery, almost adolescent voice had the biggest hit of his career with his self-produced single "Seasons in the Sun" (1973).

ERIC CLAPTON - Les Trois Mousquetaires (1988)

Recorded at the Tokyo Dome "Big Egg" on November 2, 1988.

This is the complete show. Some reviewers have noted this as a soundboard recording, when in fact it is an excellent audience recording, as evidenced by the prominent crowd noise near the taper between songs. Instruments come through clearly, vocals have a bit of natural reverb and echo from the venue. Very listenable, especially after the world-class audio work from the Mid Valley folks. Recommended.

JOHN LEE HOOKER & CANNED HEAT - The Best of Hooker 'n Heat (1970)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Hooker 'N Heat is almost universally considered the greatest album in the long and storied careers of both Delta bluesman John Lee Hooker and California boogeymen Canned Heat. These wonderful songs are as improvisational as any jazz session: Hooker finds a beat, starts off, and lets the boys in the band play catch-up until they run out of musical ideas and the song ends. Hook has special praise for Alan Wilson, the Heat's wunderkid harpist, noting that Wilson is the best harmonica player ever: "I don't know how he follow me, but he do." In this best of the best compilation from those sessions (a great idea for us budget-minded listeners), standout songs include "Burning Hell," which is the Hook's rockin' and rollin' take on the afterlife, "The World Today," a talking piece circa 1970, in which the fiftysomething Hooker identifies with young people and is glad "the old coots are gone," and "Boogie Chillen' 2," an 11-minute jamfest of Hooker's first hit that will have you jumping out of your seat. For their part, the Heat add outstanding instrumental support (singer Bob "the Bear" Hite adds no vocals, but aids in production duties); as noted above, Wilson's harp work is fabulous, and this record must be seen as the crowning achievement of his career. (Sadly, he died while waiting for the record to be released; thats his picture on the wall in the album photos.) In short, a thrilling offering from two of the rockingest, boogieingest (is that a word?) artists ever, and one to surely lift you out of your seat. Get this disc and turn up the heat!!!

THREE DOG NIGHT - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Three Dog Night (2000)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Yet another entry in Universal's wide ranging 20TH CENTURY MASTERS reissue series, this budget-priced 12-track compilation is a brief but thorough look at this early-'70s pop-rock supergroup. Led by ex-Brian Wilson protege Danny Hutton, Three Dog Night had a knack for hit singles which were exceedingly catchy without being gimmicky. With their solid taste in contemporary songwriters--Hoyt Axton (with two songs, "Joy to the World" and "Never Been to Spain"), Randy Newman, Laura Nyro, Harry Nilsson and Russ Ballard wrote the group's biggest hits--and the strong harmonies of Hutton and lead singer Chuck Negron, Three Dog Night were one of the most distinctive-sounding and musically satisfying groups of the era. Collecting all their major hits, 20TH CENTURY MASTERS wisely includes the superior mono mixes whenever possible. This is a fine, inexpensive introduction to an under-appreciated band.

B.B.KING - Blues On The Bayou (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

There's an undeniable pleasure in listening to a veteran bluesman do his stuff. For Blues on the Bayou, which he also produced, B.B. King presents a stripped-down, simply-arranged recording that's as tight as a coiled spring and smooth as a freshly-polished dance floor. From the first track, "Blues Boys Tune," a slow instrumental dripping with organ riffs, this CD is chock-full of the sort of guitar work that a master like King makes sound effortless. Whether it's the mid-tempo playfulness of "Bad Case of Love," or the slow "Blues Man" with its sparkling-clean guitar work, or the wistfulness of "Darlin' What Happened," or the sheer sweetness of "If I Lost You," Blues on the Bayou proves why King is considered the reigning master of blues guitar. Even the violins sound right and proper here, and King's sidemen turn in some impressive work as well; there are in particular some great piano solos on this disc. On the whole, Blues on the Bayou is a slow-burning treat.

BONNIE RAITT - Silver Lining (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"The latest in a series of highly polished albums of good-natured boogie, blues, and singer-songwriter fare, Bonnie Raitt's Silver Lining won't disappoint the initiated. Recorded with her highly seasoned road band and coproduced (again) by the ubiquitous Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake, this is a high-quality product. The question, as always, is whether the material raises it to the level of extraordinary. Raitt picks songs shrewdly. Here, the unearthed gems are David Gray's title song and the closing ballad, "Wounded Heart," by Jude Johnson. Less successful and more, well, familiar are the songs cowritten with her bandmates. Instrumental highlights include Bonnie's slide duel with Roy Rogers on "Gnawin' It" and Andy Abad's highlife guitar chops on Oliver Mtukudzi's "Hear Me Lord." Jon Cleary's barrelhouse keys throughout owe a debt to Billy Payne of Little Feat. One may occasionally wish the producers had been allowed more rein to pepper the arrangements with their trademark quirky instrumentation, but the record rewards repeated listens."

BUDDY GUY - Buddy's Baddest: The Best Of Buddy Guy (1999)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"The title's baloney. Sure, some of Buddy Guy's most blistering guitar playing has been captured on his '90s recordings for Silvertone, but with albums like Muddy Waters's 1964 Folk Singer and his own 1967 solo debut A Man & the Blues on his résumé, Guy's status as a Chicago blues giant was assured long before his 1991 comeback Damn Right, I've Got the Blues. Nonetheless, that tune, the instrumental tribute "Remembering Stevie" (for the late guitar-slinger Vaughan), "Five Long Years," and the previously unissued "Miss Ida B" testify that at age 65 Guy still possesses rare depth and fire. His singing is big and soulful, capable of cheerleading a party or hurtling down to the depths of Delta blues heartache. His six-stringing remains wildly inventive and unpredictable, even on slight numbers like "She's a Superstar." And the inclusion of blatant stabs at the pop charts such as his "Midnight Train" duet with Jonny Lang take nothing away from the passion he puts into true blues performances like "I Need Your Love So Bad" and "Innocent Man," leftovers from earlier sessions that surface here. Baddest or not, this CD spotlights one of our greatest bluesmen in fine form."

"Everything I Need", a re-release from British blues-rocker Aynsley Lister, is a breath of fresh air from start to finish. However, it’s no surprise that many blues-rock listeners haven’t heard his name, nor have they been exposed to his exciting guitar playing style and potent vocal ability, even though he’s been releasing impressive records since 1999 and touring extensively. Great music these days is often eclipsed in a world dominated by machine-generated pop. One of the better new young guitar players. Listen to the song Angel O'Mine and it taste for another song. Imagine that their blues - and booze - soaked guitar style were given a deeper throb and a raunchier fuzz. "Deep In The Blues" won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. This is James Cotton unpled--an all-acoustic album collaboration (in various combinations) with pianist Dave Maxwell, blues guitarist Joe Louis Walker, and the great jazz bassist Charlie Haden. There are so many spellbinding moments here that it's almost a shame to single any of them out. However, highlights definitely include Walker's National steel guitar solo "Vineyard Blues," Cotton and Maxwell's deeply moving take on Maceo Merryweather's "Worried Life Blues" (a performance which easily surpasses the better known versions by Chuck Berry and the Animals), and a spectacular version of Muddy Waters' "Two Trains Running." Various Artists - Reggae Gold (2005)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Listening to the first third of REGGAE GOLD 2005, one mightget the impression that it would be more accurately titled DANCEHALL GOLD. The disc is heavily front-loaded with tracksby some of the biggest dancehall artists around, including Beenie Man, Sean Paul, and the Godfather of dancehall, Buju Banton himself. Eight songs in, however, there's a drastic change-up, as things take a much more melodic turn, with tunes from Bitty McLean, Beres Hammond, and others, mixing roots reggae, rocksteady, and lovers rock. McLean's "Walk AwayFrom Love", which juxtaposes the old David Ruffin Motown classic over a vintage Duke Reid Studio One track, is easily the highlight of the whole collection. Towards the end, things turn back around to dancehall with such heavy hitters as Sizzla and Elephant Man closing out the album on an up note. Nevertheless, it's still pretty tough to get that McLean track out of one's head.

RICKY WARWICK - Tattoos & Alibis (2003)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Ricky Warwick from The Almighty have abandoned the former punkish metal rock and gone for a more adult and melodic approach in Tom Petty style. "Tattoos & Alibis" is a pleasant album with mostly acoustic driven songs in a rather laid back manner. Maybe it will some time for the 14 songs to really sink in but some of the tunes will probably get your attention immediately, like the Steve Earle sounding "The church of paranoia", the Tom Petty inspired "Mysterioso", the title track "Tattoos and alibis" and the catchy "Ending is better than mending" with its obvious country roots.

CHARLIE WOOD - Lucky (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Blues organist Charlie Wood was the house player for almost two decades at Memphis's famed King's Palace on Beale Street. This 2006 album reveals killer chops (not just on Hammond B-3 organ but drums, bass, and guitar) and tasty blues-pop songwriting. If you take the B-3 organ sound of Booker T. & The MG's and combine that with the lyrical wit of Mose Allison, you get the soulful, bluesy Charlie Wood.

TOMMY LEE - Tommyland: The Ride (2005)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Rock'n'roll is inherently more crazy and thrilling than the straight world: this is the premise of new rock star reality shows like Tommy Lee Goes to College. The title of the Mötley Crüe drummer's accompanying solo album also promises some form of non-stop fun bonanza. In the event, Tommyland: The Ride stands as testament to the way rock can be duller and straighter than almost any other human endeavour.

DEF LEPPARD - Rock Of Ages:The Definitive Collection (2005)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"While many of their peers were abandoning '70s metal and arena rock to hop the punk/new wave bandwagon, def leppard smartly stripped the earlier era's music of its excesses, bolstered it with energetic, pop-savvy hooks and quickly found itself the vanguard of the UK's new metal revival and one of the '80s most spectacularly successful rock acts. The first disc of this 35-track, two-and-a-half hour double-disc retrospective focuses on the familiar hits of their early MTV, platinum-selling prime, though the inclusion of the video edit/remixes of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Rocket" attempts to cast them in a more club-friendly contemporary groove. But the grittier second disc showcases some of the early, overlooked roots of On Through the Night and High 'N' Dry, as well as underappreciated later gems like '99's "Promises" and a power-pop-perfect take on Badfinger's "No Matter What" from an upcoming covers project."

GUITAR SHORTY - I Go Wild! (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"In his sixth decade of playing the blues, Guitar Shorty returns with the duly claimed I Go Wild. These 13 cuts cover gritty soul/blues the way Shorty would play 'em on any given Saturday night in any number of blues joints around the world. Shorty has not mellowed with age. One of the strong points of I Go Wild is Shorty's ability to translate the exhilaration and acrobatics (literally) of his live show into the studio. The showmanship of Shorty's mentor, Guitar Slim, and student, Jimi Hendrix, is evident. Needless to say, the 13 cuts provide matching passion and rambunctiousness. Jim Pugh's Hammond B-3 organ adds an extra dimension to the proceedings."

STEVE HACKETT - Wild Orchids (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us thumbupthumbupthumbup

For almost 40 years now, Steve Hackett has been one of the most innovative artists on acoustic and electric guitar. His technique came to be known as landmark in the musical business and influenced rock giants like the original Genesis formation, among others. As a solo artist, he skilfully moves between various musical spheres of refined rock music. After the release of his classical album Metamorpheus, he again has produced in Wild Orchids a real rock album that bursts with experimentalism, playfulness and vigour and shines with its jazzy and folky elements. The unique artwork, which is quite characteristic for all Hackett’s works, derives its ideas entirely from Kim Poor, his wife. The deluxe Special Edition of Wild Orchids comes packaged in a hi-quality slipcase and contains four bonus tracks.

BOB DYLAN - Biograph - 3 CD BOX (1985)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Biograph is more than just a retrospective; it is essential for any Dylanophile. While it indeeds collects the majority of the essential tracks in Dylan's canon (Rolling Stone, Heaven's Door, Watchtower, I Want You, Blowin' In The Wind, etc.), classic album tracks (To Ramona, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, etc.), live and alternate take offerings (Visions, I Don't Believe You, It's All Over, etc.), and the best of the latter day tracks (Gotta Serve Somebody, Groom, Every Grain of Sand, etc.), what makes this set an essential for the hard-core (other than the revealing sequencing, which puts a whole new light on the material, and the deluxe packaging) is the generous smattering of previously unreleased material. Absolutely first-rate songs such as Percy's Song, Caribbean Wind, and Up To Me stand up well to his officialy released canon. This, along with Volumes 1-3 of The Bootleg Series, show that Dylan throws away tracks that any other artist would kill to have written. This release was so good, in fact, that it set the standard (and the pattern) for all box sets to come. It stands as a good primer for those new to Dylan, and also as an essential addition to the catalog of the fan who already has everything else.

STEPPENWOLF - The Best of Steppenwolf (1999)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Steppenwolf earned its place in the rock pantheon thanks to "Born to Be Wild," the deathless classic immortalized in the 1969 counterculture flick Easy Rider. But there was more to John Kay & Co. than a theme song for motorcycle rallies. Steppenwolf also offered social commentary in the form of "Snowblind Friend" and "The Pusher," prime psychedelia ("Magic Carpet Ride"), and plenty of good-time hard rock ("Hey Lawdy Mama," "Rock Me"). In some ways, they were the thinking person's hard rock band (a specialty niche, to be sure, with Kay's band taking their name, after all, from a Hermann Hesse novel). Alas, like so many examples of MCA's 20th Century Masters collection, this Steppenwolf set contains some fine music, but is inferior to a previous package--1999's All-Time Greatest Hits, which offers many more tracks for just a couple more bucks.

JOHN MARTYN - Solid Air (1973)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

John Martyn (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, synthesizer) began as a folksy minstrel but seemed drawn to experimental, free form improvisation. Solid Air is where John Martyn's love affair with effects and echoplex became serious. The title track, dedicated to his close friend Nick Drake, became a eulogy, while the breezy "Over The Hill"--one of the greatest songs ever written about a train journey--is a feathery delight. "May You Never" and "Don't Want To Know" continued the simple, stoned ballad approach, although it is his interpretation of Skip James' "I'd Rather Be The Devil," totally reshaped with hypnotic shifts, tidal echoes, and a slurred growl, which broods over the whole album. A record that remains Martyn's youthful zenith.

CARLY SIMON - Into White (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

One of the best and most popular confessional songwriters of the '70s, Carly Simon combined pop sensibilities with a folk background for a series of smash hits. During her tumultuous marriage to James Taylor, the pair scored big with a duet cover of Inez & Charlie Foxx's "Mockingbird." Simon has since branched out successfully into singing standards and providing songs for soundtracks. Featuring musical direction from Simon's son Ben Taylor, who co-wrote the tune "I'll Just Remember You" and sings harmony vocals with his sister Sally Taylor (their dad James Taylor is represented by a warm version of his lullaby "You Can Close Your Eyes"), INTO WHITE touches on folk, jazz, and country alongside Simon's standard soft rock. There's even a bossa nova tune, Antonio Carlos Jobim's classic "Manha de Carnaval." Along with these, the Cat Stevens-penned title track, Paul McCartney's "Blackbird," and other pop hits are transformed into quiet, delicate re-arrangements that focus on Simon's fine vocals.

FATS DOMINO - Alive and Kickin (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

"Alive and Kickin'" is Fats Domino's first new release since "Christmas Gumbo" in 1993. "Fats was looking for a meaningful way to give back to his hometown after Hurricane Katrina," said Tipitina's Foundation co-founder Roland von Kurnatowski. "He made it very clear that he was making this donation to us because he felt it was important to support the Foundation in its efforts to rebuild the New Orleans music community." In a scene that played out on television screens around the world, on September 1, 2005, the 77-year-old Domino was rescued from the roof of his flooded home in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward by a Coast Guard helicopter. After spending time in a shelter and apartments in Baton Rouge, the Domino family returned to New Orleans in October to begin rebuilding their home.
"This album is a soulful musical message from Fats to his millions of fans around the world that he, the people of his beloved city of New Orleans, and its vibrant musical community are ‘Alive and Kickin'" said Bill Taylor, Director of the Tipitina's Foundation. Eleven of the album's 13 tracks were recorded over the decade prior to Hurricane Katrina, but the effort took on a renewed sense of urgency for Fats as his hometown has pulled together to rebuild.

Fleetwood Mac's magnum opus of 1979 is considered by some to be their greatest work. And while you are probably familiar with the hits, you may not realize that this recording is full of gems like Christine McVie's gorgeous "Brown Eyes" and Lindsey Buckingham's rousing and infectious "I Know I'm Not Wrong." Of course, even the Nikei industrial average would sound beautiful if it were sung with Christine's wonderful voice. And Lindsey Buckingham's home recordings that show up here are a virtual blueprint for the indie-rock home-recording scene that would flourish nearly 20 years later. OZZY OSBOURNE - The Essential Ozzy Osbourne (2003)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

The two-disc THE ESSENTIAL OZZY OSBOURNE is essentially as advertised: a comprehensive 29-track collection of Ozzy's best-known solo material. Whereas Black Sabbath was all about the biggest monster riffs humanly possible, hammered into the listener's brain until he or she had either a spiritual awakening or a seizure, these discs display a much greater pop sensibility. The Oz-man easily straddles both furious Iron Maiden-style Brit metal and gorgeously melancholy ballads.

BONNIE RAITT - Bonnie Rait & Friends (2006)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Judging from her two live releases, this and 1995's Road Tested, everyone's favorite slide-guitar-playing, rootsy redhead loves working with other musicians. Generally known for raising the visibility of older blues and R&B legends such as Ruth Brown and Charles Brown, she invites more contemporary stars Ben Harper, Norah Jones, Keb' Mo' and Alison Krauss along for this set. Recorded during a September 2005 evening, this slick package catches Raitt and her muscular four-piece on tour supporting Raitt's 2005 album Souls Alike. Perhaps not surprisingly, the setlist is heavily weighted to that album, with nearly half the selections drawn from it. Although those songs are well played, they don't differ markedly from the studio versions. It would have been more interesting to cherry-pick older, more obscure material from Raitt's extensive career. Regardless, the duets work well in a restrained VH1 way, with Harper the highlight as he lays into the gospel "Well, Well, Well" and the double-barreled slide showcase "Two Lights in the Nighttime." Raitt's in fine fettle throughout, slinging stinging slide solos and singing with her usual emotional fervor.

RICK JAMES - The Best Of Rick James (2000)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Short and sweet, this ten-track compilation hits all the high points of Rick James' career, from his 1978 number one debut single, "You and I," to the 1984 triumph "17," collecting every major hit in between while casting off James' post-1984 denouement without a second glance. But really, the casual fan looking for hits without misses won't need to go any farther than this disc. You won't find any rarities or unreleased material here. What you will find are all the songs that propelled James to peaks that glinted off the gorgeously arrayed rhinestone feathers of his "punk-funk" empire. "Super Freak," "Give It to Me Baby," and "Cold Blooded," all chart-topping heavyweights, are here. So are the equally juicy "Mary Jane" and the Smokey Robinson duet "Ebony Eyes." It would have been nice to see a few of James' other funk jams included, but that probably would have defeated the purpose of this tight budget set. For the super-freaky '80s retro-ist who's looking for snappy party favorites, 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Rick James will certainly give the biggest bang for the buck. Everyone else will be better served by a more complete package.

04. Mary Jane

SIMON & GARFUNKEL - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

When a retrofit of electric guitars transformed "Sounds of Silence" into Simon & Garfunkel's folk-rock entrée, the partners and their label hastily followed with a like-titled album mixing Paul Simon's acoustic folk songs with pled-in bids for radio play. By contrast, this successor, released less than a year later, more coherently and convincingly reveals Simon's broadening horizons as a writer and the duo's nascent studio perfectionism. The title song remains a haunting signature piece, relying on acoustic guitar and harpsichord to carry its contrapuntal marriage of English ballad and antiwar plaint; such acoustic delicacy prevails throughout and as proven more durable than by-the-numbers wattage. The first great S&G album, the set includes "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)," "Homeward Bound," "Dangling Conversation," and Art Garfunkel's luminous solo piece, "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her."

JOE HILL LOUIS - Boogie In The Park (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Everything that Joe Hill Louis recorded for Modern and Meteor in the early '50s is on this 28-track compilation. That includes singles, scattered cuts that would first show up on numerous anthologies on different labels years after they were recorded, and a previously unissued alternate take of "At the Woodchopper's Ball (Jack Pot)." Virtually all of Louis' Sam Phillips-produced sides are here, and there's even an extensive interview with Phillips in the liner notes. Most of the Phillips material is one-man blues, stuff that in its way reflects the transition from country blues to electric blues and rock & roll.

JONI MITCHELL - Blue (1971)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 128

Joni Mitchell would go on from this '71 recording to make more popular, more ambitious, and more challenging albums, but she's never made a better one. Working with minimal accompaniment (Stephen Stills and James Taylor are two of the four sidemen), the Canadian thrush summoned an involving song cycle of romance found and lost. Though Blue is an uncommonly intimate representation, it's also astonishingly open and gracious. Songs such as "All I Want," "Carey," "California," and "A Case of You" work equally well as poetry and pop music.

ERIC CLAPTON - Rush: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack (1992)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Rush is an excellent dark blues score written by Eric Clapton (with help on the three songs) and performed by an augmented version of his band. This soundtrack album produced one big hit for Clapton with "Tears in Heaven," but it's a wonderfully intense piece of work all the way through, with some terrific guitar work from Clapton himself. Buddy Guy turns up to add lead vocals and guitar on the 11-minute version of Willie Dixon's "Don't Know Which Way to Go," and that's more than all right too. There's a very good chance that the dark intensity of this music was as much informed by the tragedies in Clapton's life ("Tears in Heaven" is about his son) as the film itself. Whatever the cause, this album has far more impact than you might expect from the score to a movie -- there's a sense of the music here working something out in Clapton's heart, a sense given a lot of power thanks to the intense, heart-wrenching passion invoked by some of the turns taken here. At its best, Clapton's music can speak of the pain he feels -- and Clapton has rarely been better than he is here.

GUNS N' ROSES - Use Your Illusion II (1991)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Had Use Your Illusion II been combined with Use Your Illusion I, keeping only the best material while dropping the filler, it would have been one of the best rock albums ever recorded. Instead, great songs like "Civil War," "14 Years," "Estranged," and "So Fine" compete with the inexcusable "Get in the Ring" and the well-intentioned but off-target cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." There's no point to the second version of "Don't Cry," either. On the other hand, when Guns N' Roses were good, they were very, very good, and some of the material on this album is unsurpassable.

V.A. - The Crow: Original Soundtrack (1994)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

The Crow was a film that built a cult following, and the soundtrack is the same. It features rarities by some of the biggest names in alternative music, and fits the gritty tone of the movie, but is somewhat hit and miss. Stone Temple Pilots' "Big Empty" is a bluesy rock song, but Nine Inch Nails' cover of Joy Division's "Dead Souls" is silly. Easily the most recognisable song is The Cure's "Burn," but there are other tracks which surpass it.

01. Burn - The Cure
